Natural Holiday Makeup

Holiday makeup is always pretty, but not always natural looking. I wanted to do a look that is still fun and festive, but isn’t so over-the-top that if you don’t wear a lot of makeup you’d feel like an imposter in your own skin. how_to_do_eye_makeup_1I started with all the basics. Also, in the following paragraphs I am being a bit more detailed because I want you guys to understand why different products work for different things <3

Foundation: Airbrush (this set gets you all the basics you need to figure out your exact color match, plus you have options if you are more fair in the winter or more tan in the summer. Also great for anyone wanting to do makeup on others.)

You can also apply the foundation with a normal foundation brush. I love this brush here

A good foundation for oily skin is Double Wear Light

Double Wear Light

A good foundation for normal dry skin is this one from YSL

YSL Foundation

For normal/combo or normal to dry skin I like this contour cream

Contour Cream

Use this Armani brush to apply the contour to the sides of the nose, and under-curve of the cheekbone

Armani Brush

then blend with a damp beauty blender.

  Beauty Blender & Cleanser

If you’re more oily or prefer a matte finish, I like this Sculpting Powder

Sculpting Powder
and I apply the contour powder down the sides of the nose and under-curve of the cheekbone using this Armani brush here
 Armani Brush

Undereye Concealer: Lancome Effacernes

Eyes: Urban Decay Anti-aging eyeshadow primer (makes your eyeshadow stay on)

MAC eyeshadows ( Light under-brow is Blac Type. Warm brown in crease is Saddle. Darker brown outer corner is Brun.)

Use brush MAC 239 for Blanc Type

Use brush MAC 213 for Saddle and Brun.

Mascara is Lancome Hypnose

Brows: This Anastasia brow set is error-proof. To figure out which stencil fits your brows, hold them up to your brow and whichever one lines up closest at the peak (or arch) of your brow and where your brow starts, is your stencil.

Lips: Native lipliner.

MAC Myth lipstick.

On lid add the gold: To get a reeeeally good metallic finish I used Makeup Forever Flash Color (gold) This case is SO USEFUL! I remember when I bought it thinking “I’m not sure if I’ll use all of these colors.” But this thing has come in handy SO many times! I’ve used it as a cream blush, I’ve used it for face painting, and for a million other things like on the back up kiddos in this music video (Despicable Me inspired ;))

Add the gold from this

For metallic shadows and creams I like this brush MAC 242

Eyeliner on top: Chanel Liquid eyeliner

Eyeliner on bottom: Lancome Le stylo Noir

Lashes: Ardell 122

Lipgloss: Bobbi Brown Crystal I like this gloss because you can put it over anything and it doesn’t change the color, just makes it crazy shiny and smooth.

Natural makeup for photos

before_after_web_natural_makeupI got this lovely gal ready for some photos and it was great chatting with her and her hubs (who had like the WORST day ever and was still having a good attitude about being in photos. I was impressed.)

Here’s was I used:

Complexion: Tarte Clean Slate face primer,  IIID Foundation in Sunlit, Stone, Ruby and Pearl,  Cle de Peau concealer,  Guerlain ‘Les Voilettes’ Translucent Loose Powder Mattifying Veil, Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray

Eyes: Urban Decay Anti-aging shadow base, MAC eyeshadows in Antiqued, Ricepaper, and Woodwinked. Liner on top is Chanel black liquid liner, lower inner rim liner is Lancome Blanc.  Lashes are Siren from House of Lashes. Brows are Anastasia Brow Wiz in Blonde and Anastasia angle brush.

Lips: Urban Decay lip liner in Rush. Lipstick is MAC Syrup. Gloss is Bobbi Brown Crystal.

Hair: Gold n Hot 3/4 inch curling iron, Oribe Superfine, Oribe Beach Spray

I realized that I will often just link to different products and not necessarily explain why I like them. Let me first tell you that I’ve been told I have a very high attention to details, at least with certain things. I take this feedback as a nice way of saying that I’m super picky :). I spend SO. MUCH. TIME. looking for products that are the best of the best. In fact, I’ve had to ground myself in the past from makeup browsing because I can spend countless hours on it! For a few months I had a firm “use what I already own” rule.  It lasted until more of my favorites got discontinued haha.

So today I’m going to talk about the Chanel eyeliner I love. I was first introduced to it by my dear dear friend Jeanne years ago, who also had a very high attention to detail. But she was way better than me at remembering the names of every single product ever made, also every single human’s name. Brilliant person.

The reason I like this eyeliner:

  • Super black pigment
  • Stays on really well
  • Has a skinny minny brush that makes it easier to get a thin line

I feel like every single product ever made can have a downside. Some things I can deal with, others I can’t. This one’s totally tolerable. In fact let’s just call it the “take extra care to notice.”

So take extra care to notice that occasionally it will have too much product on the brush. NBD I just wipe the excess off before I apply. That’s it!

winter_work_clothesI was starting to feel bad that I sometimes get super lazy about doing my own hair, and wear lots of hats. But then I decided to track how much time I spend on just cleaning and organizing makeup, and It’s about 10 hours a week! (this does not include my inventory and product research.)  That made me feel a little better about my occasional lack of getting ready.

Speaking of cleaning makeup, another product that I love is the Makeup Forever brush cleaner.

I just spray it on a towel or paper towel and then wipe the bristles of your brush back and forth. Super effective! This product’s “take extra care to notice” is just careful to not overspray and then inhale (you’d think that would be common sense, you…would….think…ha) it can be kind of fumey.

Oh and my dress is from Shabby Apple

And this hat i’m obsessed with is the Eugenia Kim Harper  hat.

I FINALLY caved and bought this after going through, literally 3 other grey similar style but cheaper hats, in the last 6 months. When I was first wearing it my husband said “Oh! You were able to fix the hat that shrunk!? Oh wait, no that’s the one where the top came off from the rest of the hat, did you sew it?” Soooo, ya. I guess sometimes you get what you pay for. I wear this hat, like probably too much. It’s holding up like a champ.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! xoxo

makenna

My favorite thing about my job has to be the people. I get to be around all kinds of super rad wonderful people, and I also love having the opportunity to share in their laughter and special moments.

I first met one of those super rad wonderful people — Makenna — when I was doing makeup for the Utah Jazz Dancers, ’cause she was one of them! I had the chance to do her makeup on her wedding day, and I was so excited to see her and her brand new hubs, Aaron. They had just gotten married (literally 20 minutes before they stopped by my studio), and I was doing a touch up on Makenna’s makeup. I asked her how it felt to be a Mrs., and then I went to ask Aaron how it felt to be a Mr…

…and then I realized, what a dumb question! His name hasn’t changed! 😆 Aarons immediate response was hysterical. He responded with the quit wit of a Brit (did I mention he has a British accent? ) jokingly laughing “My name DID change. It changed from Mister to Master.”  What a character!

For her hair:I used my Sultra ‘The Bombshell’ 1.5-Inch Curling Iron and Kenra 25 Hairspray.

Halloween Makeup Poison Ivy

Hey guys! I’ve got some more halloween makeup tips coming your way, but in the meantime I thought I’d spruce up the post I did last year for the Poison Ivy makeup look with updated products (ie. not currently discontinued, hate that!) and give some more pointers!

ivy_makeup

-Apply your foundation and contour color. If you have a foundation you love, use what you already have. If you’d like recommendations, here you go: You can contour with this Laura Mercier Custom Contour Compact (I just found it and love that it’s refillable) and you can use this Temptu Foundation to just spray right over the top of your contour, which means you won’t lift off your makeup trying to blend. OR for a fast everyday contour and foundation in one Maskcara Cosmetics is where it’s at.

-Add your concealer, bronzer, blush, lip liner and gloss. I used Laura Mercier Secret Concealer, Bobbi Brown Bronzer in Natural, Shimmer blush is Laura Mercier Peach Mosaic, Urban Decay lip liner in Bang,  and Chanel gloss in Constellation.

-Make sure everything is blended together nicely! I love using the beauty blender for that.

-Add eyeshadow and lashes. I used the Naked Basics pallette (these are all matte) and wanted a bit of a metallic finish so I added MAC Bronze. I used Ardell Wispies for her lashes.

-Get some leaves like these ones here and spray them with some glitter spray and allow them to dry.

-Apply lash glue to the back of the leaves and allow it to dry for about 45 seconds before applying to the skin.

-Layer the leaves on the skin adhering each one with lash glue and allowing it to fully dry. Apply green eyeshadow between the leaves to create extra detail. I used the green colors from the UD Electric Palette but if you don’t want the whole pallette the color Swimming by MAC would work great.

-Add some rhinestones (similar here) to the center using lash glue. And you’re done!

Destiny

destiny_September2015_websIsn’t Destiny just beautiful?

If you’ve ever been on my blog before you know I often use the Temptu S/B formula. As I try to explain to people how to use it, I am realizing that it may be more of a professional product because you have to deal with opening several different bottles and cleaning between every color, basically it takes longer. Most day’s I don’t even take the time to do it on myself. BUT Temptu has a new way to airbrush that is SO MUCH easier, and you just use this little machine shown in the photo from Temptu below.I’ve had the Airpods (the foundation that is used along with the little machine,) for a while but the machine I used with them has cords and is bigger. (If you’re dying to know it’s this one here 😉 )

SO to get Destiny’s look I’d recommend going with a foundation like Lancome Teint Miracle or for the airbrush option the Temptu. Love these little pods!

The Guerlain bronzer in 08 works great to contour for medium-deep skin tones. All of their bronzers are great. Her concealer is Laura Mercier Secret . Blush is Tarte Blushing Bride and I used Guerlain ‘Les Voilettes’ Translucent Loose Powder Mattifying Veil and her illuminator is Laura Gellar Gilded Honey.destiny_September2015_webs

On her eyes: Urban Decay Anti-Aging Eyeshadow Primer Potion, MAC eyeshadows in Saddle, Bronze and Ricepaper (classic fav’s,) Tarte inner rim liner,  and Nars Eye Paint in Black Valley  using the Bobbi Brown liner brush to apply. Hypnose Doll Lashes mascara on lower. Lashes are Siren from House of Lashes.  Brows are MAC Brun.

On her lips: Dolce&Gabbana BonBon and Chanel Sweet Beige gloss.  I applied the lipstick, then gloss then a little more lipstick.

Xoxo

back to school

In honor of back to school I wanted to post a little bit about the makeup and hair I do for senior photos. Like with any makeup or hair that I do, I always take into consideration that individuals personality and personal style.
One of the questions I ask is “How fancy do you want to look?” that helps me figure out if they’re wanting to go all out and look super glammed up or if they want a “I didn’t really try too hard I’m just am super hot” kind of look….or somewhere in between.

Joy didn’t really care so I just did what I thought would look pretty. senior_photos_makeupMajor babe. makeup_senior_photos_hair_wavy_hairBefore and after
before_and_after_vivianmakeupartist_senior_makeupComplexion: I used airbrush foundation on her (because I own every color under the sun) but any good foundation that stays on well will work too. Laura Mercier contour palette.  Bobbi Brown Bronzer in Natural (I also used a little on her neckline to add warmth because her arms were a lot tanner than her face and neck and I knew she’d be changing into something that’d be showing her arms.) Tarte Cheek Stain in Natural Beauty. Lancome Effacernes Concealer in Light Buff. Lancome Translucence powder in 200 Buff. Highbeam to illuminate.

Eyes:Urban Decay Anti-Aging Eyeshadow PrimerMAC Eyeshadow in Omega, Lancome Khol eyeliner in Blanc on lower inner rim, Nars Eye Paint very thin on top applied with the Bobbi Brown Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush.  Individual lashes in short and medium using Duo glue in dark.

Lips: Lancome L’Absolu Rouge lipstick in Blush Classique with Lancome liner in Blush. Bobbi Brown Crystal gloss.

Hair: Hot tools 5/8 curling iron, Oribe Superfine

Thank you to Angie from Simplicity Photography for these photos! (Also she has a video for sale that teaches everything you need to know about how to take gorgeous senior photos.)

Have a great week! xoxo

Simply Sadie’s Simply Sweet Makeup Look

Longtime client and friend, Sadie from simplysadiejane (she blogs about fitness, and other useful things) was asking me about how she should be doing her makeup since she drastically changed her hair color (she used to be very dark. See other post here.) We had a little fun. makeup_headshot_natural_tutorial_vivianmakeupartist_webOne of my favorite things about this look was her lip color. I first moisturized her lips with my favorite lip product Bite  and then blotted it down. I then softly outlined her lips in what I’d call a lip contour color, I used MAC Stone lip pencil. Then I used one of my new favorite lipsticks Tom Ford Luca (it’s often sold out but I found it in stock here, woohoo!) Then added a little Bobbi Brown Crystal gloss.natural_makeup_simplysadiejane_vivianmakeupartist_webComplexion: For her foundation, bronzer and contour I used Temptu Airbrush, but my recent favorite non-airbrush foundation is Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation (for those of us who do not have the time to airbrush ourselves every day, including myself!) Cle de Peau Concealer in Ocher, Tarte Cheek Stain in Fearless, and Guerlain Loose Powder Mattifying Veil in medium.

Eyes: Urban Decay Anti-Aging Eyeshadow PrimerMAC Eyeshadows  in Bamboo, Saddle, and Embark. Mac Creme liner on top in black (dark brown would have also looked great,) and Lancome Khol eyeliner in Blanc on lower inner rim. Too Faced mascara and Kiss Individual lashes in short, medium and long.  In her brows I used Anastasia Brow Wiz in Taupe and Anastasia Brow Pen in universal-light. fitness_makeup_body_glow_vivianmakeupartist_webAnd on her body I used Gleam in Rose Gold mixed with a little Gleam Bronze Gold. I’ve been talking about body glow products a lot lately because I love them. *Some things to be aware of when using Gleam: you’ll want to wait a couple minutes for it to dry and be careful when you’re getting in or out of your clothes. Other than that I haven’t had problems with it getting on my clothes. It’s easy to wash off or wash out, so that’s good.

Thank you to Jessica Janae for the photos. Isn’t Sadie adorable? natural_makeup_fitnessmakeup_vivianmakeupartist_webI’ve recently started doing yoga again, to help with the neck and back issues I have from work. It’s starting to help but sometimes I want to switch it up a little. What are some of your favorite workouts to do?

the perfect bridal glow

Something that I learned in makeup school is you should always address ANY of the skin that will be showing on your client, not just on their face. So depending on their outfit I always try to remember to look at their neck, arms, back or legs and see if any of it needs to be smoothed or color corrected.

Funny side note, the teacher talking about this told us that Conan O’Brien refuses to let anyone put makeup on his hands…even though apparently it looks pretty distracting when his hands are anywhere near his face.

Sometimes just adding a little glow and evenness to your body is enough to take your entire look to the next level. You can see the subtle difference on her arm in the photos below.
bodyglowwebI’ve been trying all different kinds of body glow products all summer long and here are my favorites:

For a sheer more subtle look, I love Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body

For a more reflective look with a little more coverage, I like Gleam. They make several colors and you can find help choosing your correct shade by watching the videos on this page here.glow_bridal_makeup_webIsn’t Marina lovely?

More details for this look coming soon.
