Winging it

Winged eyeliner is all the rage right now! I’m seeing it everywhere!
vivianmakeupartist_wingedlinerAnd it’s the first thing on the list of The Best Makeup Trends For Spring 2015 along with several other spring makeup trends. My personal fav’s are the Brown-Eyed Girls (brown eyeshadow trend) and the Bare Minimum (barely wearing any makeup, makeup look.) What’s your favorite makeup look right now?

And of course, the winged eyeliner look.

These photos are from a while ago and I didn’t even know winged liner was going to be such a thing! Maybe I’m telepathic and I knew it would be an upcoming trend!? Or maybe it’s just pretty so I did it…..

Jobs in Florida

As I’ve mentioned before, getting mom’s ready for family photos is one of my favorite jobs. I feel like they deserve the pampering and it’s so rewarding to see their faces light up when it all comes together and they look in the mirror. Gives me warm fuzzies 🙂

It was pretty killer to be hired to do makeup and hair for several sessions in Florida this past fall. Seaside was stunning! Even after only getting like 30 minutes of sleep (taking the red-eye seemed like such a good idea at the time 😯 )

I went with Angie from Simplicity Photography who’s one of the greatest people I know. I totally had to force her into letting me take this photo but Florida looked good on her! It needed to be documented.angI loved all of these sessions!

vivianmakeupartist_floridaJust a little bit of makeup for this pretty teen…..
florida_teensAnd a just a smidgen on these angels……. (here are the links if you missed my posts on hair tips for family photos or makeup for kids)
florida_vivianmakeupartistfloridaAnd this darling family….how great is her smile?
familyseasidemotherdaughterI have been told that it can be stressful trying to coordinate outfits for several people, and I can only imagine! I don’t have kids but I have caught onto some things along the way and thought I’d share.

  • Decide on the look or the feel you want to have for your shoot and then pick an inspiration piece, then build from there. If you tend to be pickier about what you wear, or what you look like in photos, it’s probably a good idea to find something you love for yourself first, and then coordinate around that.
  • Take photos in the actual clothes then line the photos up next to each other (this might sound extreme but it’s super helpful.) Things that seem to look good in my mind or laying next to each other on the bed, look different when I actually put them on. Make a private Pinterest board and upload the photos to look at them next to each other or for iphones there’s an app called Pic Jointer that can put up to 4 photos next to each other.
  • Preparation is key, even if you’re shopping in your own closet. These photos are to document a certain stage in life so do your best to just enjoy the time at the shoot with your family. Often photo shoot days are stressful and husbands and kids may be in a particularly bad mood for some reason. I hear bribery works nicely! 😎 And if everything doesn’t turn out perfectly, oh well! Sometimes the best photos aren’t the ones where everything is exactly in their place with everyone looking right into the camera. Sometimes it’s just about capturing those magical moments with your little ones. hairup_familyphotosI think this lovely mama thought of all the details though…..I just noticed her adorable little toe ring!famseasideseaside_hairandmakeupAnd these precious gals warmed my heart!makeup_travelmakeupforfamilyphotosPhotos by Angie Simplicity Photography Probably most of the advice too 😉
seasidefunWe got to play for a couple of hours while we were there. And maybe paddle boarded right next to 4 dolphins….. it was a blast! Yes, yes it was.

Kjerstin Makeup

beforeandafter_Doing makeup on someone with colorful hair like this made me have to think a little bit (heaven forbid right!? 😛 ) Like hmmm, do I need to do brighter makeup so her hair doesn’t take all the attention away from her pretty features? Or do I do lighter makeup so things aren’t competing? After a couple of adjustments and finding out the location of the photo shoot, I decided that a gunmetal-neutral toned smokey eye and slight pop of color on the lips would be a good balance.
free_people_makeupkjerstin_makeupfree_peopleHere’s what I used: (P.S. ARE THESE LISTS USEFUL? COMMENT AND LET ME KNOW! Yes, No, Kinda Sorta?)

EYES:Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer,MAC Eyeshadows Kid on the crease, Carbon on the outer corners. Stila Vintage Black Gold on lid applied lightly, Stila Liquid Eyeliner,  Hypnose Mascara, Ardell Wispies strip lashesAnastasia Dipbrow in Blonde for brows.

O Holy Night, Kenzie Nimmo

It was incredible working on set when this video was being made. Kenzie, Harris and John are the absolute nicest, most talented, down to earth people and it was so amazing to see the magic when they came together. They really did this whole video in one take, it’s incredible! Before they started filming Kenzie just asked that while they’re singing this, to be thinking about the actual message they are singing about, and the emotion totally comes through in the video. Oh and please watch til the end!

video by Wride Photography.

As mentioned in the video, all the proceeds from the Itunes sales will be going to help a family in need this Christmas. So happy to be a part of it.kenzie_nimmo_hair_makeup

Beachy Waves

Beachy waves are still one of the most frequently requested hairstyles from my clients. It’s just such a great look for so many things!  Zoe totally rocked these textured beach waves.  beachy_waves_verticlebeach_waves_verticleHere are my two favorite styling products to achieve this look→ Oribe and Beyond the Zone. I used a one inch Sultra curling rod and I also threw in some Bellami clip-in extensions . I also really like Laced Hair Extensions  and LocknLong extensions are great for anyone who doesn’t want to have to clip something in every morning!behind_the_scenesOh, and I did the beach waves really fast first, then styled it in a fishtail braid.fishtailThen Zoe took it out half way through her shoot, tossled it a little bit, and then let it be free!

Glorious photos taken by Tyson French. (Free People’s featured this shoot on their blog and main instagram, which is kind of awesome. Great work Ty and Zoe!)

Makenna Makeup

The first time I did makeup on Makenna Alyse it was for one of her performances (she’s a dancer for the Utah Jazz) and we couldn’t stop talking the entire time. I’ve been lucky to work with her several times since and felt honored that I got her ready for her engagement photos, bridals, and wedding day. She’s a beauty and I think her and Aaron are perfect together!makenna_alyse_makeupHere are the details on her look:

My Family Photos

My husband and I had some “family photos” taken this year since we reeeeally struggle getting a decent photo together (one of us will inevitably be in the middle of talking or blinking, pretty much every time.)  So we went on an adventure to some sand dunes!vivian_jeff_sanddunesdunesGoofySometimes I can’t decide how I want my hair in photos. So I style it and then take it out in the middle of the shoot so I can wear it down too. sanddunephotoshair_downsand_dunesWe have oh so much fun together….dunes_funblack_whitebwBWFarWe really did have so much fun, thanks to Angie! Simplicity Photography

Hair Tips for Family Photos

Family photos have definitely evolved since I had them taken and some of my favorite jobs are getting mom’s ready for family photos. I have been loving the up-styles I’ve been doing for them lately. Here’s some photos I grabbed (with Angie’s camera 😉 ) before Angie and Chloe left to go take their family photos. I did little fishtail pig tails for Chloe’s hair and I feel like they looked so cute with Angie’s updo.family_photos_hairfishtail_braidsNot sure if you want to totally commit to an updo for your photos? Here’s an idea! (I recently tried this with my client Brittany and I loved how it turned out.) I curled her hair and styled it all down. Then I sent her with a hair tie and told her to pull her hair up into a pony tail half way through the photos, just to switch it up. I love how they both turned out!cute_down_hairstylesfamily_photoscute_pony_tailhair_family_photosAren’t they the cutest!?! These photos were taken by Simplicity Photography

Doing a hair change (even a really simple one) might be easier said than done, depending on how the shoot is going 😕 ha. Sometimes getting just one photo without someone crying, is all one can hope for (or at least I’ve been told!)

You can’t go wrong with a really pretty down hairstyle like this one from Angie’s photos last year ↓family_photos_indoorPhoto by Blush Photography

If you’re doing interactive, candid type family photos it can be nice to have something keeping your hair and your little ones hair out of your face. This flower crown is adorable! ↓

angie_photosPhoto by Blue Lily

I’m also a big fan of headbands. Here’s a cute one from Urban Outfitters and I love that it ties because it will look cute from all angles and you can make it smaller or bigger so it will fit perfectly.

I love getting families ready!
