Vintage Inspired Hair and Makeup

I’ve had a lot people request this hairstyle calling it a number of different things like vintage waves, finger waves, vintages curls, retro hair…..all I know is I love it. I feel like this look is always in style and is so girly and glamorous. vintage_makeup_webvintage_hair_makeup_webvintage_makeup_vintage_hair_vivianmakeupartist_webvintage_vivianmakeupartist_makeup_hair_web

Hair: I used the GHD Curve Classic 1 inch curling iron (this curling iron is good but pricey. For a budget-friendly curling iron I also really like the Hot Tools 1 inch curling iron.)  For products, I used Oribe Dry at the roots before backcombing and set with Oribe Superfine Hairspray.

Deciding how to wear your hair

Pinterest can be a wonderful resource for browsing options and getting ideas. However, it can also cause serious decision fatigue (it’s a thing. I read a book about it once!)

I am here to help you narrow down the options so you can make a non-cluttered decision (something I wish I would have done for myself when I was getting married! Ya live and ya learn.)

I have been shown this photo several times and I think it is just stunning (hair by Hair and Makeup by Steph. Model Kat Frazier, Photo by Amber Weimer, Florals by Janae Frazer.)flower_crown_updoI just want to point out a few things in this photo to consider when making your flower crown (or having it made.) The flowers are only on one side of the crown in this. A crown with flowers going all the way around looks beautiful as well, but has a different vibe.

Also the wispy pieces coming down and the amount of volume this hair style has, is part of what balances out this look. Ah so pretty!

flower_piece_side

The next thing you want to think about is what you may want your hair to look like in the front. These hairstyles are beautiful, but……swoopy_hairDo you notice anything that they all have in common? A trend that I like to call the Jessica Rabbit…..the eye cover.

While that makes for a gorgeous photo (I’ve had a few hair-covering-eye photos taken myself!) Having an alternative look in mind for the front of your hair can be helpful since you’re likely not going to wear your hair covering one of your eyes the entire day.

Unless you’re Kim, somehow she managed…..kim_kardashian_blonde

But like I said, it can look really pretty in photos, so if you love it make sure to mention it to your photographer so they can get some photos with that vibe for you!

Next thing. If you’re considering an updo, to get a realistic idea of what the updo will look like as a whole, look for photos that also show the front and side, rather than just the back. It can be hard to do, so if you’re not able to then that’s ok!

But here’s an example of why:

Over the last few years I’ve had several clients show me this photo julianne_updoThey liked her hair and we all assumed that she probably had some kind of elaborate, super full, amazing chignon updo of sorts happening in the back. Finally, I wanted to solve the puzzle so I hunted down a photo of the other side! julianne_otherside(Hi Taylor, cute curls! 🙂 )  The other side of Juliane’s hair is actually suuuuper simple! Like, there isn’t really another side! Like all her hair is swooped over to the left to create it’s amazing-ness and also to probably keep a sleek and simple look.

Interesting.

Moving on. The messy/textured updo phenomenon! hair_messy_blonde_updoThis look can be great because it allows for a lot more freedom (no need to panic if the wind blows or if you get a fly away!)

Some things to notice with this hairstyle—-A LOT of the photos shown online of this look are going to have highlights in their hair (I am mentioning this because all of the photos ever shown to me by someone wanting this kind of hairstyle, have highlights.)

textured_updosjessica_alba_hair_messy_updoBut what if you have no highlights? And instead you have silky, satiny, not-naturally-textured hair? No worries! You can definitely still have this kind of a hairstyle! Just know that it may look a little bit more smooth.

Also if you have dark silky hair, here’s a great way to add a little texture if you don’t want to highlight your hair (this is also great even if you do have highlights!)

Add some dainty details!

updo_dark_hair_flowersOr instead of a veil something like this
bridal_headpiece(head piece is from Australia and can be found here.)hairstyle_vivianmakeupartist(That hairstyle was actually done by me. Photo of Michelle by Brooke Schultz.)

I just threw a whole lot of info at you! So now what?!

Consider these things:

How do I feel the prettiest? (down, up, half-up?)

What will look best with my dress?

Am I going to wear a veil? If so glance at photos of the type of hairstyle you’re considering and how it will look with a veil. A veil can really change the look of things!

Bonus tips:

When you’re getting ready, if it feels too fancy or like it’s too much, picture yourself in your wedding dress (or put it on if you can) then reassess. Sometimes hairstyles can feel a little too glam if you’re getting ready in an old baggy t-shirt.

On that note. When going to your appointment or just doing your own hair, don’t forget to wear something with a very wide neckline or a button up, so the beautifulness doesn’t get destroyed when it’s time to change your clothes! How about we end with a few photos of my pretty clients? 🙂bridal_updo_vintage_hair_vivianmakeupartist_webPhoto by Kailey Rae Photography

Makeup for Kristin

So I was in Walmart the other day and got a little sidetracked….. I heard that an article that I wrote for Train Magazine was out (the one with Thor on the cover.)train_thorI talked about how to make your makeup sweat proof. You should check it out. But after seeing all the fun photos of makeup in the article, I was curious about what kinds of treasures Walmart possibly had.

So I wandered to the makeup aisle and found THE cutest lipstick and it was only $6.98flower_lipstickIt’s by Flower Beauty and the color is called LS11-Morning Glory.

Kristin’s birthday was coming up and she wanted to do an extra special photoshoot for it so she hired me to get her ready. So I used that lipstick for her first look.
flower_lipstick_makeup_webI wanted you guys to be able to see what it looks like by itself 🙂 I love it. It’s kind of a cream finish that blots down to a more matte finish.

Here’s Kristin’s before and after, I added a little gloss to vamp it up. before_and_after_kristin_webIsn’t she already beautiful in the before photo?! She gave me free reign on her makeup look and said she just wanted big messy hair so for that I used my fav’s:

Hair: Oribe Beach SprayOribe Dry, and the Sultra 1 inch

Complexion: Lancome Teint MiracleContour by Maskcara in Stone, Temptu Matte Bronzer, Lancome Effacernes Concealer

Eyes: Urban Decay Eyes Shadow Primer, MAC Eyeshadow  in Saddle and Brun. I also used Brun in her brows using the Anastasia angled brow brush and set them with Brow Gel.makeup_glamourbeachy_messy_wavesPhotos of Kristin taken by Emmy Lowe Photo

Lola

I kept thinking that Lola looked familiar, then I realized, it’s just that she looks like the kind of girl all the heart-throb songs are written about.

Jaci Marie took these freaking amazing photos.

I hope everyone is having a good Monday! I think i’m going to go enjoy some of this gorgeous weather.

Sometimes I like simple

Somehow, I have no idea how it’s possible, but I forgot about these pictures. It’s probably one of my favorite makeup and hair looks that I’ve done….well at least that I have documentation of.
natural_makeupvivian_makeup_maraeSo I always have a back and forth conversation in my mind when I am about to post about a product I’d recommend, and it sounds about like this: “What if I recommend something and then I find something I like better tomorrow? Or what if I recommend something and it’s not exactly right for what the person needed it for and if I could have talked to them about it I could have told them how to use it correctly or recommended something else that’s better for them!?” And on and on and on……

It kind of becomes torturous and certainly not productive. But I am undergoing some serious product analysis currently so that I can give some more universal recommendations. Does anyone have requests for any certain type of product?

On a different note, I have watched this Ted Talk so many times and still love it Your elusive creative genius. Whether one agrees with her or not, I still think it’s interesting 🙂 And I love her delivery.

I’ve been into simplicity lately. And not trying to toot my own horn by ANY means but I do like these hairstyles for a simple bridesmaid look (perhaps curling her hair a touch more in the first photo if it was for a formal occasion. Just barely though.) simple_bridesmaids_hairstylesPhotos of Marae by Zuzanna Audette

*Coming soon ! A simple but stunning eye makeup look using only 1 eyeshadow.

Have a happy day you guys!

It’s Me!

It’s me! My very own before and after on myself 🙂 vivians_beforeandafterI thought I would have a difficult time posting this, but to my own surprise I am actually excited about it! It’s a lot of pressure to feel like you always have to be perfectly put together, don’t you think? Of course I think it’s so fun to get ready and get dolled up! But my reality, especially over the last year, is that I definitely don’t get ready everyday. Sometimes, there’s just lots of other things I need to get done.

I’m working on conquering my insecurities. Because, insecurities are just….annoying! Aaaaaand sometimes cause me do things that are inconvenient and kind of weird. For example making my husband Jeff, go into a restaurant and order my food (having to call me mid-order because he can’t remember all the ways I like my order,) then bring it to me so I can eat in the car. Because I didn’t get ready and I am certain that I’ll run into people I know. I’ve always known that it’s a little ridiculous, but writing it out, just confirmed it. 😎

I remember once when I was a young teen, complaining to my mom about not liking the shape of my legs. And she said something that I had never thought about before. She turned to me and said “At least you have legs. And not only do you have them, but they work. There are so many people that would give anything just to have the chance to walk.”

She was right. I try to remember that our bodies are meant to be able to do things, and they don’t just exist to look a certain way.

Speaking of bodies, I am constantly having issues with my neck and back. Ya, I’m already falling apart I know! Haha, and I picked an interesting profession to work in, since I’m always hunched over while I’m working. When I have a tension headache I’ll lay down on my back with a pillow under my knee’s and rest on this thing here, and I just found it for half the price I paid for it! Even if I only lay there for a few minutes, it at least helps a little bit with my neck pain, so I thought I’d share.

So here are the details on my getting ready process:

I get spray tans 1-2 times per month and I go to Bella Airbrush Tanning in Salt Lake.  I get the half body tan (much cheaper if you get a package) and I ask the owner Amanda to do from my knee’s down and then my chest up. Kind of funny but I wear a lot of long maxi skirts and short sleeves tops, so the parts she tans is about all anyone sees! If I obey all the rules (there’s super useful info on the Bella site,) my tans last about a week, sometimes up to a week and a half. I always exfoliate with the Baiden Mitten before my tanning appointment.

I curled my hair using the Sultra 1 inch curling iron. This curling iron curls my hair faster than any curling iron I’ve tried. And I sprayed my hair with Oribe Beach Spray, and I found it on Amazon! Guys, why do I love Amazon so much!?

And here are the details on my makeup:

Complexion: Laura Mercier Smooth Finish foundation (this is like a medium coverage foundation, good for oily skin.) theBalm Bronzer on my forehead and neck, nose contour by Maskcara in Shadow, under eye concealer is Laura Mercier Secret Concealer, I used #3. Blush is Tarte Cheek Stain in Flush (you can’t really tell in this photo, but it’s like a sheer berry color.)

Eyes: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer, and I just used one eyeshadow actually and it was MAC Antiqued. Lancome Le Stylo eyeliner in Noir.Hypnose Mascara, Flare lashes combo pack.  And my new fav brow pencil (because it’s super fast) Dolce&Gabbana brow pencil in Soft Brown. A more budget friendly option, and one I use often is Brow Wiz.

Lips: Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro Lip Stain in Gio

I mostly needed a before and after photo, but Jessica took some other photos and did a great job!vivian_johnson_makeupThis blazer is already on sale and if you enter the code 20PRES15 at checkout it’s an additional 20% off for Presidents Day. It’s a little spendy but fits amazingly and is so comfy. Same with this top! Enter the code at checkout (sometimes I forget to enter the codes! Don’t forget!) And this is the necklace I’m wearing.
vivianjohnsonvivianI hope you all had the most wonderful Valentine’s Day yesterday and a great Sunday xoxoxo

Wavy Curly Hair Texture

wavy_hairMust haves:

A 5/8 inch curling iron

Beach Spray

Sometimes when people have naturally wavy/curly hair and they say they hate it, I want to cry a little.  I get it, sometimes the hair is not all the same amount of curly. Sometimes it’s straighter on the top and ringletty on the bottom. You just need to help those lil curls out a little.

My wavy hair to do’s:

-Be careful while towel drying. Opt for a gentle wrap and squeeze rather than a wrap and rub back and forth (that can cause the hair to be more frizzy.)

-Use the right products. On Jessa I used this mousse (I got it when I purchased my Kenra 25 Hairspray.) Here’s an update on my current favorite products for a wavy or curly hair look:

  •  A mouse that’s good for all hair types (straight hair but wanting it to hold curl better or wanting to control curly hair) is this one here from Oribe and the bottle lasts forever! So if you just want to try it out you can also get this travel size one
  • I spray this Beach Spray before grabbing a few sections of hair to curl (instructions below) Oribe Beach Spray travel size here. I must say, Oribe makes some great products.
  • If you hate the feeling of anything in your hair but want some softness and control I like this whipped creme mousse . I wouldn’t say it’s a must have but that’s because I don’t mind having lots of hair product in my hair 🙂

– After applying some mousse from root to tip, blow dry your hair with a diffuser and flip your head upside down for a little bit more volume. If your hair tends to get frizzy, use a lower setting.

-Wrap sections of hair around a small curling iron to give it a little bit more curl in the areas that need it.  You can just grab random sections, it doesn’t need to be super uniform. It’s fast and will make a big difference.

Jessa’s hair is amazing! I made her come to her appointment with wet hair so I could style it using the previous steps, from start to finish.
Here’s the makeup I used on her.

Complexion: Temptu s/b Foundation in 004 And did you know you can apply this foundation with a brush? I have been using this one a lot and love it with this formula, and it’s cheap! Laura Mercier Secret Concealer in 2.5, theBalm Bronzer

Eyes:  Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer,  MAC Eyeshadows in Copperplate, Bronze, and Embark, Tarte inner rim liner,  Demi Wispies, Hypnose MascaraBrow Wiz in Taupe and Anastasia Brow Pen in light.

Lips: Urban Decay lip liner in Obsessed (blotted and blended to soften the color) MAC Pro Longwear Lipglass in Patience Please. Similar to MAC Myth
